ollowing on from our best entry level sat nav award which was deservedly won by the Navman S30, we decided a review of the all singing all dancing cost no object sat nav was required.
In the process of our deliberations we were sidetracked by an older but no less deserving model. That being the Tomtom Go 720.
Whilst Tom tom has updated its range in 2008 with the new 30 series it has to be said that the new bells and whistles didn't add much to its existing series. Certainly not enough to justify the price premium.
So, with that in mind we accidentally found our mid-price winner for 2009. The launch price of the Go 720 was £330 but if you shop around you can pick up the 720T for just £179.99 some £125.00 less than the new top of the range Go 930T.
We would like to see a new contender for the sat nav crown and whilst the competition is closing in Tomtom remains the iPod of the sat nav world. Well it also take our sat nav of the year award? Watch this space.
So the 720 can be purchased at a mid range price is easy to use, dependable and intelligent. If features a massive 4.8 inch touchscreen so it is easier than ever to see a clear picture of your route.
Battery life is acceptable and charging can be via in-car lighter or via a usb connector plugged in to your PC.
The Tomtom really scores because of its ease of use and excellent speaker. Importantly, it is very quick to recalculate if you go off route something that always frustrated me with my second generation Tom Tom One.
At this price point though we expect more than just sat nav and this unit doesn't disappoint enjoying a bluetooth facility which enables the routing of calls via the unit which will display text messages and act as a hands free phone device.
For the technically liberated you can also route voice instructions through your FM radio, hook up your iPod and set destinations via verbal instruction.
All in all an excellent device and despite it's age a worthy winner. Buy one now whilst stocks last.
